Advanced engineering company TP Group invests in technology as it expands into new markets and looks ahead to Industry 4.0
Following strong growth in the nuclear sector, TP Group launched a £1.5 million state-of-the-art Advanced Manufacturing Centre at the company’s Dukinfield facility, near Manchester, earlier this year. The mission-critical and safety-critical equipment that TP Group designs and engineers is manufactured at this site as well as a facility in Portsmouth.
Partnering with Solid Solutions, a leading SOLIDWORKS reseller, TP Group invested in 3D CAD software six years ago. “Obviously a lot of companies have adopted 3D CAD but from our point of view, it really has helped us revolutionise our business and take it forward,” says Jon Constable, TP Group’s Director of Engineering & Technology.
In the last couple of years, TP Group have worked with Solid Solutions to ensure they have additional SOLIDWORKS Products to further improve the design process. These include SOLIDWORKS Electrical, which has resulted in a 50% reduction in time in creating wiring harnesses, as well as SOLIDWORKS Composer, which allows TP Group to easily generate the documentation packs that go with their equipment.
Positioned for growth
However, as TP Group has expanded, the engineering team found it increasingly difficult to manage files especially as some products may contain more than 1,000 parts with several different variants and configurations. Additionally, some products have to be managed for at least 30 years meaning that all product information needs to be maintained.
This led to the decision to invest in SOLIDWORKS Product Data Management (PDM) software, which Solid Solutions is currently helping the company implement.
“For us PDM is an opportunity to simplify what we do and to really help us improve our workflow. Through the implementation we estimate at least a 25% time saving,” says Constable.
TP Group is also looking ahead to how SOLIDWORKS can help with the company’s vision for the future in using digital information to help improve workflow, which will have dividends in the manufacturing process particularly as we move towards Industry 4.0.
