Make a date with the UK’s top engineering event – Southern Manufacturing 2018

Southern Manufacturing & Electronics returns to Farnborough from February 6th to 8th 2018 for its 20th anniversary and the first show in its new permanent home, the £30m Hall 1 of Farnborough International Exhibition and Conference Centre. The state-of-the-art 20,000m² venue, designed by award-winning architects Terence O’Rourke, offers world-class facilities, easy access and free on-site car parking for 3000 cars.

Southern Manufacturing & Electronics 2018 will bring together an expected 800 of Europe’s top engineering suppliers for arguably the most important annual engineering event of the year. For process engineers, the event offers the chance to see literally thousands of components – both electronic and mechanical – software, OEM parts, consumables and production hardware. Some of the big-name brands on show include such as HepcoMotion, Igus, Davall Gears, Nikon Metrology, Renishaw, Matsuura, Brady, Cosel, Delta Electronics, Yamaichi, ODU and TDK Lambda amongst hundreds of others. But it is also still the main annual exhibition for a huge variety of specialist SMEs, between them offering an incredible range of expertise, niche products and services. These two aspects of the show make it one of the most productive events you can attend, especially if multiple sourcing issues need to be addressed.

As in previous years, the venue is divided roughly equally between electronics and manufacturing technology, and then further loosely sub-divided into focus areas such as Subcontracting, Production Machinery & Tooling, Packaging & Logistics, Electronics Production and so on. There are no rigid boundaries between the various areas and visitors are encouraged to explore the rich variety that the show has to offer. Technology Trails bring together firms with expertise in particular areas such as Aerospace or Medical Technology, and the Trails are multi-discipline, so it’s possible to easily find, for example, both electronics and precision engineering firms with Aerospace expertise. Pre-registered visitors to the show receive a free Show Guide catalogue to help them locate products and services of interest to them and a free 12 page preview magazine to help plan their visit. The show’s ever-popular free seminar programme alone is an important reason to visit the exhibition. The seminars tackle a wide variety of technical and commercial topics, and are designed to appeal to anyone involved in engineering or manufacturing, from business advice to reviews of the latest advances in manufacturing technology. The programme for 2018 is perhaps the most comprehensive yet, and offers its customary high standard of presenters drawn from industry, academia and commerce. A total of 34 sessions over three days will address a variety of topics, from lithium ion battery technology, Industry 4.0 and the rise of the Cobots, to IP rights protection, life after Brexit for manufacturers and the implications of the forthcoming GDPR regulations. All of the sessions are free of charge, although pre-booking is definitely recommended. A complete listing of sessions and the online reservation form is available at http://seminars.industrysouth.co.uk .
