Rupture Discs: your most important safety device

Rupture or Bursting Discs, a non-reclosing, fail safe device. Probably the most misunderstood and least appreciated safety device used in systems where pressure or vacuum are present and where excess pressures or vacuum may need to be controlled and relieved when conditions exceed the safe design parameters.

The first discs were very simple flat pieces of metal, weakened to open, sometimes with very little accuracy or predictability, at a supposedly fixed pressure. Over the years the technology employed in controlling pressures in the various types of oil, gas, petrochemical and other downstream industries has improved and developed to high levels of safety, mostly through the use of electronics and pneumatics to maintain a safe working pressure regime in the various plants.

The Energy Savings Opportunity Scheme (ESOS) and Pump System Audits

The Energy Savings Opportunity Scheme (ESOS) Regulations 2014 came into force on 17 July 2014 and are a mandatory energy assessment and energy saving identification scheme for large undertakings (and their corporate groups). The scheme applies throughout the UK. ESOS Energy Audits have the potential to increase businesses profitability and competitiveness by identifying cost-effective savings which, if implemented, will improve energy efficiency. The scheme is estimated to lead to £1.6bn net benefits to the UK, with the majority of these being directly felt by businesses as a result of energy savings.

ESOS is the UK Government’s approach to transposition of Article 8(4) of the EU Energy Efficiency Directive, which requires all large (non-SME) enterprises to undertake energy audits by 5 December 2015 and every 4 years thereafter.

MIT Tests New Energy Valve Technology at Charles Hayden Library And Reaps the Rewards of Higher Delta-T!

Low Delta-T Syndrome is a common (and costly) problem in many large facilities, especially on sprawling campuses with central chilled water plants. This was and still is the case at The Massachusetts Institute of  Technology (MIT). But the problem isn’t as bad as it use to be. Facility engineers within the University’s Sustainability and Utility Planning are now optimistic that it will continue to improve. This is in thanks to new valve technology from Belimo that was applied to MIT’s Charles Hayden Library as a beta test for a new Belimo product – the Belimo Energy Valve™. The results are promising for any large facility currently battling Low Delta-T
Syndrome.

Nordson EFD fluid spray systems reduce costs and downtime

Nordson EFD’s MicroMark® precision spray marking systems produce neat, consistent spots and stripes from 3,3 to 30 mm wide without overspray or clogging. Designed for reliability and low maintenance, the MicroMark systems dramatically reduce downtime on automated and semi automated production lines.

Based on EFD’s proven Low Volume Low Pressure (LVLP) precision spray technology, the MicroMark valves provide fast, controlled application of a wide range of marking materials. The system’s high transfer efficiency and quick cutoff improve part appearance and keep work areas clean. A short microburst of air after each shot keeps the nozzle from clogging and reduces maintenance. The valve spray nozzle defines the pattern of the spray – the 787MS valve enables 3,3 to 5mm sprays, where the 781S-SS valve allows round or oval shaped covers from 5 to 30mm.

Hydra-Cell® Pumps in Oxygen Scavenging

Following site trials pumping aggressive oxygen scavenging chemicals, Occidental Petroleum in Oman has approved Hydra-Cell pumps, from Wanner International, for use in one of their most demanding applications.

Dissolved oxygen in injection water can cause destructive oxygen corrosion to metal pipes and process equipment. By-products of this corrosion form sludges that cause plugging and blockages. This oxygen is generally removed through the introduction of oxygen scavenging chemicals into the high-pressure stream.

Rising to a lining challenge for Alstom

Repair Protection and Maintenance (RPM) has now completed the difficult internal lining of two Braithwaite bolted panel tanks for Alstom Power at Ratcliffe-on-Soar near Nottingham.

The tanks had been redundant for many years before it was decided to line them to use them to contain water for use with a new project.

RPM used the Nu Tank lining system, which only required manual surface preparation to ST 2. This system was developed in the early 80s to provide a good, long term coating for water tanks in roof spaces in sensitive buildings such as hospitals, food processing plants and high rise offices or flats, where grit blasting would be both impracticable and potentially too messy for the surrounding environment.
