REMBE GmbH – Is your profit leaking away?

Leaking Pressure Relief Valves (PRV) are known as a significant source of rouge emissions and product wastage, not forgetting that leakages are a safety concern for site and 3rd party personnel.  Operating companies have increased their routine valve maintenance regimes, wasted time and money trying to perfect leak monitoring systems to identify the leaks all of which fail to solve the problem, these valves will still leak! They have ignored the best solution, use a REMBE® Bursting Disc to isolate the PSV, result Zero leakage through PRV’s!

An API standard covers the testing and inspection requirements for pressure relief valves and gives tables showing the acceptable leakage for a new or re-furbished PSV to meet the pass criteria to be put into service. In today’s world there can be no acceptable leakage; that just wastes money and increases the safety risks to personnel in the plant and those living in the vicinity.  By isolating the PSV from the process with the right REMBE® Bursting Disc the valve is now 100% leak-proof and this also allows for PSV testing in-situ, no downtime for routine PSV pop testing, a huge saving on maintenance costs as well as lost production.

REMBE® has specialized in process safety and explosion protection for more than forty years and recommends all refinery operators to revise their procedures to meet the Zero target for rouge emissions. “The sole implementation of safety valves doesn’t make sense in every case. There are certain sensitive process areas, where one is truly better advised to implement robust bursting discs.” says Stefan Penno, Managing Director of REMBE® GMBH SAFETY+CONTROL, the specialist for process safety from Brilon/Germany.

Based on this background, REMBE® has invested in specialized in laser technology and developed a unique two-layered REMBE® reverse acting buckling-pin bursting disc (KUB®). Its usability in those types of demanding processes has proven itself for years.

Other bursting disc manufacturers still use the outdated technology of mechanical scoring of the disc, this can weaken the disc integrity and lead to premature failure of mechanically scored discs, leading to expensive plant downtime. The KUB® mechanism is based on the buckling-pin principle discovered by Leonard Euler. The fact that the REMBE® response pressures are accurately defined by Euler’s buckling-pins engineered and positioned by state-of-the-art laser technology, means that end users can operate their plants safe in the knowledge that rouge emissions are now eliminated.

“Once our bursting disc is installed, KUB® needs no further maintenance or adjustments as you do in the case of valves and the REMBE® reliably safeguards the process/plant. Only in the event that the disc has activated due to overpressure must it be replaced. The service life timeframe can vary for the disc to be replaced, after a year, a decade or never”, Stefan Penno explains.

“In light of recent events, it would be wise to inspect the process safety and efficiency of existing as well as newly constructed refinery plants. By installing supplementary bursting discs, money can be saved and give long-term reliability at least in regard to operating and maintenance costs associated with PRV’s.”
