How to use online learning as a platform to develop your career in the engineering sector

Online learning

Many programmes in the past could be studied at a distance, students would use text books and mail in assignments. While this made study possible it could be quite an isolating experience. Supported online learning not only gives you access to all the materials you need but you are able to discuss ideas with fellow professionals and have live face-to-face discussions in a virtual classroom with your tutor. All you need is access to a computer with a good internet connection and a microphone, and if you want to be seen, a camera.

University of Derby Online Learning (UDOL)

As the thriving online learning division of the University of Derby, UDOL is dedicated to providing part-time online degree programmes, professional courses and continuing professional development (CPD) opportunities to people around the world who require more flexible study options. Our expert academics and online learning advisors understand the needs of an online student and are there to support you throughout your studies.

What courses do UDOL offer?

UDOL offers more than 40 different courses including Advanced Materials and Additive Manufacturing MSc and Professional Engineering MSc to over 3,000 online distance learners, located all around the world.

How interactive and engaging is online learning?

UDOL prides itself on interactive courses. The computer is your gateway to a whole community of students, from across the world, with which you can constantly interact while being supported by a professional academic team.

The learning materials provided allow you to engage in different virtual worlds; learn through videos, read the latest publications through the University’s e-library and work through bespoke learning materials produced by the academic team.

The main bulk of students our Engineering programmes are qualified professionals from a range of fields and businesses located globally. Learning and networking with others will help inform your practice and develop your international understanding, increasing your global competiveness.
Is it more expensive to study online?

Nope, studying online can actually be cheaper than the on-campus equivalent course; you don’t need to spend money on travel or accommodation.

Case study: Stephen Pearson

Age: 54

Currently studying: Professional Engineering MSc, due to complete in July 2017.

What made you want to study this course?

I’m an ex-Army Officer, having spent 12 years in the army; I was ready for a change. I originally started my army career as a Telecommunications Technician, it wasn’t long before I was promoted through the ranks to Staff Sergeant in the Corps of Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers (REME) and then commissioned through Sandhurst 18 months later. I undertook a Higher National Diploma (HND) in electronic engineering while a Sergeant and haven’t been involved in an academic qualification since. A former army friend suggested I look into doing a Masters instead. I looked around and found that UDOL offered a competitively priced course that met my needs.

Why did you decide to study online?

It seemed to be the most effective way of undertaking the Masters without it really interfering with my normal work routine.

What have you enjoyed the most about studying online?

Everything! I’ve really enjoyed getting back into academia as I’ve been out of it for around 30 years. It’s been fun and the ability to choose my own projects that integrate with work has been extremely useful. It’s also been good to work at my own pace, some weeks where I’ve been away on holiday or had heavy work commitments and I haven’t been able to devote as much time to my studies, I’ve been able to make it up afterwards by putting extra hours in where needed.

What was the stand out feature of studying online?

The tutors have been excellent throughout the course. There has been great support and interaction between students and tutors and as one of them commented, “They are learning from us as much as we are learning from them.”

Can you describe your experience of online learning using just one word?

Fun.

What are your plans once you have completed your degree?

As a result of enjoying the academic side of things so much, I have decided to move on to doing a PhD immediately after graduating. I would wholeheartedly recommend the Masters with UDOL as it has been a fun couple of years.
