AEG Power Solutions chosen by Maire Tecnimont Group to provide UPS for Total’s latest Italian oilfield

UPS for major development

The Tempa Rossa development is one of the biggest ever oil and gas projects in Italy. Multinational energy company Total, and its partners Shell and Mitsui, are currently developing the project. It is expected in 2016 to produce 50,000 barrels a day of oil, as well as 230,000m³/d of natural gas and 240 tons/d of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) and 80 tons/d of sulfur.

The main engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contractor for the project at Tempa Rossa is Tecnimont S.p.A., main subsidiary of Maire Tecnimont Group, industrial leader in the hydrocarbon industry with headquarters in Milan. As part of its work in building this facility, Tecnimont needed to procure 25 Uninterruptible Power Supplies (UPS).

Tecnimont’s material requisition specified that it wanted 25 systems with three different types of typology. Firstly, it required 15 AC systems, some in a redundant and other in a not redundant configuration. Then, it needed 4 DC systems in a redundant configuration, and finally it specified 6 redundant combined systems for AC and DC. All those systems had to be provided with Ni-Cd batteries that were sized based on the specified load and autonomy criteria.

Technical excellence

AEG Power Solutions worked closely with Tecnimont during the technical project analysis and clarification, helping to finalise important points of the project and propose possible solutions.

Tecnimont conducted a technical review of proposals from AEG Power Solutions, along with other providers. Based on this evaluation, it chose AEG Power Solutions to provide the UPS systems. The decision was taken on the strength of AEG PS’s proposal and the assessment of AEG Power Solutions’ technical team by Tecnimont’s engineers.

“Having started to build a relationship with AEG Power Solutions during the procurement process, we could see that they had the technical excellence and experience required – as well as the best product range,” says Paolo Mondo, Maire Tecnimont Group Procurement VP. “We were confident that AEG Power Solutions was the right choice to provide these mission-critical UPS systems.”

Flexible product range

Each UPS system is made up of standard units with options, based on AEG Power Solutions’ industrial UPS and inverters for harsh environments. The company’s range is flexible and modular, which gives customers the option to specify exactly the right system for their application – from small inverters and rectifiers, up to the high power 500kVA Protect 8 UPS.

From this industrial product range, Tecnimont chose a combination of Protect 8 UPS, its Protect 8 inverter, and the Protect RCS rectifier, which was specified as the TPRe (three-phase rectifier) model.

AEG Power Solutions has also provided customized bypass panels, which it has designed as requested in the Tecnimont specification and project data sheet. In addition, for each system AEG Power Solutions provided Ni-Cd batteries for the Protect 8 UPS and Protect RCS rectifier, as well as the moulded case circuit breaker (MCCB) box for battery protection.

“AEG Power Solutions comprehensive range of industrial systems gives us the rugged, flexible and modular solution we need for this project,” says Tecnimont’s Mondo. “Regardless of the technical demands we’ve imposed on AEG Power Solutions, they have responded with a solution that is fit for purpose, and that will providing long-lasting reliability for years to come.”
