Preparing for a sustainable future: How Endress+Hauser is optimising energy usage and reducing its carbon footprint
As a leading provider of high-precision measurement and instrumentation solutions, Endress+Hauser understands that accuracy and responsibility go hand in hand. At its UK headquarters in Manchester, the company has taken a decisive step towards reducing its environmental footprint by introducing on-site solar power and a range of complementary sustainability measures.
Project overview
Established in Manchester in 1968, Endress+Hauser UK is a sales, service and solutions centre employing over 200 people to support customers in process industries. Products for measuring temperature and flow are also designed and manufactured on site. As part of a commitment to achieve net zero emissions by 2030, solar panels have been installed in three separate areas of the grounds – on the despatch building, on the training centre and on a canopy over the main car park – at a cost of more than £625,000.
The 865-panel, 387kW system uses SolarEdge inverters to maximise the energy yield. This means that each panel operates independently, reducing energy losses due to one panel being shaded or faulty. This optimised system can yield up to 25% more energy compared with traditional string inverters. In addition, built-in safety features automatically reduce high DC voltages during maintenance and emergencies, helping to protect installers and firefighters.

Measurable results
It’s estimated that the total solar project will generate 336,000kWh per year – that’s 75% of the site’s total energy use and the equivalent of 57,000kg of CO2. It will also allow for excess energy generated in the summer months to be fed back into the grid.
The investment in solar reflects a broader commitment to sustainability, says Service and Solutions Manager Phill McKie: “We take our obligations to the environment and to our community seriously, and you can’t do that without making a significant investment and continuously striving for improvements. We’re not just talking about lowering our carbon footprint but actively working towards our goals.”
