Are you maximising your Renewables?
Many owners of renewable energy solutions are missing out on 30% of their potential income. Calibrate Energy solve existing renewable issues resulting in a more profitable site in record time. Many land owners already have renewable technology installed and are disappointed with the results.
This was the case for farm owner David Robson, situated near Belsay, Morpeth. When Calibrate first visited David he was having functional issues with his Wind Turbine and Solar Cells, also his overall energy costs had not been reduced as predicted, nor had his income from the renewable technology been at the level he had expected. Calibrate Energy visited this site to analyse the existing renewables and energy bills. This information was used to produce a design that took into account the times of high energy usage, as well as the sources of the energy usage.
Calibrate Energy installed the following solutions:
• A comprehensive on-line control solution to manage the whole site, enabling David and the Calibrate team to see an overall picture in real time.
• A new Ground Source Heat pump system installed in the old millpond. This was to utilise the excess energy from the millpond, heat the multiple houses and new pipework was run across to the farm sheds for a future Hydroponics system for possible animal food production.
• New underground cables for the Solar Cells were run. This was done to enable the existing solar cells to be operated once more.
• A control set-up to manage the existing Wind Turbine and Solar Cells electricity generation to work in tandem with the Heat pump, which
• New underground cables for the Solar Cells were run. This was done to enable the existing solar cells to be operated once more.
• A control set-up to manage the existing Wind Turbine and Solar Cells electricity generation to work in tandem with the Heat pump, which then enables the tracking of real time tariffs and energy consumption, as well as the management of faults and operation of the systems from both Calibrate’s and David’s offices
These solutions will achieve payback within 5 years (this forecast does not include the extra income from the streamlined Wind and Solar process or the Hydroponics benefits). The income and savings generated over the next 20 years is forecasted to be more than £288,000 and reduce the
environmental impact of using fossil fuel. The economic viability of the system was a key driver along with the long term benefits of an annual income through the Government Feed in Tariff (FIT) and Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI). Introduced in 2010, the tariffs provide a 20 year,
inflation adjusted payment system to commercial properties generating electricity or heat through renewable energy sources, including Solar PV and Ground Source Heatpumps.
When commenting on the works to date, David Robson said: ‘Employing Calibrate Energy was a great decision, they have delivered to budget, ahead of time, and the result is an easy to operate renewable solution that encompasses the whole site. We have future potential with the Hydroponics solution and a control package that operates all of the renewable technology. This is an outstanding solution for us and I would recommend it to farmers and business owners.’
When commenting on the installation, Calibrate Energy director Shane McDonald said: ‘The benefit of having a control system similar to the one installed for the Robsons is that we now match onsite energy usage with energy production or in more simplistic terms – we run the heat pumps when the wind is blowing or sun is shining to use all the electricity and therefore gain the highest tariff utilisation, 25% more than previously obtained. For when the sun or wind is not sufficient we have installed 8000L of Hot water storage so the houses can be heated for 2 days without needing mains power input to run the heatpumps, thereby optimising efficiency and reducing costs while also maximising the tariff generation – it’s a really good solution that works for all commercial sectors’.
