Degree Apprenticeships in Chemical Engineering
Degree Apprenticeships are available to employees based in England and can be fully funded by apprenticeship levy funds (effectively tax previously paid by employers). Smaller, non-levy paying employers, can also access up to 95% of the required funding from government. The programme may be suitable for school leavers who are hired directly into a Degree Apprenticeship role, or for existing employees whom the company wish to develop into an engineering position. Successful graduates will be awarded an IChemE accredited, BEng honours Chemical Engineering from the University of Strathclyde, and a Degree Apprenticeship award from the Institute of Apprenticeships.
The Degree Apprenticeship in Chemical Engineering is built on the distance learning BEng honours Chemical Engineering, established at the request of local industry in 1992, to enable the progression of experienced technicians, into engineering roles. Unrivalled experience working with employers and industry-based students, combined with the industry developed Science Industry Plant and Process Engineer Standard (SIPPE), has resulted in a Degree Apprenticeship in Chemical Engineering that is perfectly suited to employer’s needs. The online approach to the academic components minimises time off site and maximises flexibility.
Alongside their work-based learning, apprentices study the core Chemical Engineering subjects, including fluid mechanics, thermodynamics, mass transfer, process design, learn how to use engineering programming tools, as well as gaining broader knowledge in subjects like project management, ethics and teamwork. The programme concludes with an Engineering Design project, showcasing the skills gained in the Degree Apprenticeship, and enabling the End Point Assessment and degree award.
The course is taught by a world class team of academics and industrialists, and industry experience is integrated within the curriculum. The Programme Director, Dr Kenneth Moffat, has over 10 years’ experience managing distance learning industry focussed degree programmes, and 20 years of industry experience prior to this. As a former apprentice and distance learning student, he is in tune with the needs of industry and can relate directly to the experience of industry-based students.
