S&S Plastics Ltd based in Kirkby-in-Ashfield wants to encourage more young people into manufacturing.
The company which started from a one-man operation in Ilkeston in 1989 now has a workforce of 70 and a turnover of £4 million. We are supplying over 30 different industries which include Agriculture, Medical, Electronics, Plastic Critical Bearings and many others.
Plastics manufacturing has an enormous presence in the East Midlands but a dwindling amount of youth interest has created a gap between the older and younger workforces. By working with local authorities S&S Plastics have begun to introduce GCSE students to the world of engineering with the intention of dispelling a few preconceptions. “We want to show these youngsters that engineering and manufacturing are used in all aspects of life.”
S&S Plastics currently have 3 members of staff engaged with Apprenticeship schemes. Jack is 16 doing Apprenticeship Level 2 in Performing Engineering Operations and Howard Harbour, age 20 is carrying out a HNC in Manufacturing Engineering. Finally, in our Administration department, Ryan Falconbridge age 19 is carrying out Level 3 in Customers Services. All are already showing to be valuable members of the team.
The company also runs an internal NVQ Level 2 course in Performing Manufacturing Operations which is independently assessed by Grimsby College. All new manufacturing staff are encouraged to take this course, which sets a strong foundation for their future progression.
